There is no one better to ask about enjoying the great outdoors in Steamboat than The Porches owners.
Skiing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting… there is a plethora of activities in Steamboat, but perhaps the most underrated of them all is fly fishing. As a sport that can be enjoyed year-round and with excellent outfitters that have access to both private and public waters, fly-fishing is something the entire family can enjoy. With some of the most spectacular views, a day spent in the water in Steamboat is a day well spent.
We caught up with Dick, one of our Porches owners and avid fly fishermen to get the scoop on his favorite fishing spots. Since joining the Porches family a few years ago, we have had the pleasure of welcoming him and his wife along with their children, grandchildren, and other family and friends through our doors.
Tell us what brought you to Steamboat:
We came as guests of friends to ski in 2005, and loved it on the first visit. We had been to lots of other resort towns and ski areas, but Steamboat stood out as a genuine old Western town.
What do you love about your time in Steamboat?
All the outdoors. The wildlife, fishing, skiing, hiking, snowshoeing and having friends and family visit us here.
How has your experience been as an owner at The Porches?
First rate. Not one complaint or bad experience. (And we have high expectations!)
As an avid fly fisherman tell us about your Steamboat experience:
Steamboat is one of the top areas for trout in the US and this fact is not widely known. The quantity and quality of the fish is as good as anywhere this side of Alaska. I am amazed that it keeps getting “discovered” and that the word isn’t out.
What are your favorite fishing spots?
All parts of the Yampa and the Elk are blue ribbon.
Who is your favorite outfitter in town?
Without question the BEST is Steamboat Flyfisher.
Any tips for newcomers to the sport?
Go to Steamboat Flyfisher and go on a guided trip. Their guides are professionals and can handle all skill levels from first timer to expert. Tell them Veronica and Dick sent you!
