A Steamboat favorite for over two decades
Over 2 decades ago, the Keepin’ It Free Summer Concert Series started as a series of concerts hosted on the Court House lawn, with only a few hundred people in attendance. Today the concert series boasts an average of 3,500 to 7,000 visitors per concert, for a total of around 25,000 visitors over the span of 5 concerts each summer. As a non-profit organization, sponsorships from the local community, donations and beverage sales at the events are how this event has been able to remain free for the past 26 years.
In true Steamboat fashion, these events also offer an opportunity to give back to the community through donations to Lift-Up. To date, over $26,000 and 30,000 pounds of food have been collected for Lift Up at the concerts. This event is a wonderful example of how the Yampa Valley pulls together to support our local community while having a really great time.
The Keepin’ It Free Summer Concert Series brings nationally recognized artists from pop-rock, reggae, bluegrass, blues, and funk to the center stage at Howelsen Hill. This family friendly event has become a favorite amongst locals and visitors alike. For the perfect evening, take The Porches shuttle downtown to enjoy a snack and a drink before the gates open at 5:30pm. If you’re bringing kids, we recommend packing a blanket, chairs, and anything else you may need to hang out will the kids groove to the music.
Featuring drinks and snacks from local vendors, there is plenty for the entire family to enjoy. Kids need a break from dancing? There is a kid’s play area to burn off some of that extra summer vacation energy.
This event is a passion project for the founders and the rest of the Board members who work tirelessly to secure acts that are both family-friendly and that everyone can enjoy. Some of the most memorable headliners to date include Michael Franti, String Cheese Incident, Ziggy Marley, and more. With two more shows left this upcoming summer, be sure to take an opportunity to be a part of one of Steamboat’s most famous events.
